Ecological restoration of marine ecosystems: A crucial management tool in a human-dominated world?

Hebrew >

Announcing the first international workshop on Ecological Restoration of Marine Ecosystems.

Will be held at the Interuniversity Institute, Eilat in June (22-26).

The workshop is organized by Tel Aviv University (Zoology Department), in cooperation with the Bren School of Environmental Science and management (UCSB), The Israel Society of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, and the support of the Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection and the ‘Dolphin Reef Eilat’.

The workshop consists of morning sessions, open to the research community and officials whose work delves into the marine environment. Afternoon sessions are to be closed discussions and working groups.

In the morning sessions, talks enveloping the main key topics related to ecological restoration will be presented by leading scientists in the field from Europe, United Stated, Australia and Israel. Special emphasis will be given to research and projects of marine ecosystems restoration.

The Eilat workshop is planned to be a first in a series of international workshops, with the aim of evaluating the use of environmental restoration tools in diverse marine systems. Our goal is to promote soundimplementation of such tools to expedite the recovery or rehabilitation of marine populations, and ecosystems, as well as initiation of recovery processes in stagnant situations, such as unfavorable  alternative stable states.

Topics to be discussed during the workshop

  1. Comparison of marine, terrestrial and freshwater restoration projects in order to close the gaps, accounting for differences, between marine ecosystem restoration and the latter two. The assumption is that the marine ecosystem restoration programs lag behind other ecosystem restoration programs.
  2. Examination of prior attempts of marine ecosystem restoration and identification of pit falls that led to failure
  3. Spatial and temporal scales in ecosystem restoration projects
  4. Examination and assessment of restoration tools predicted to be ecologically effective  and economically feasible/affordable in large scales
  5. Implementation of engineered marine structures (EMS) in ecological restoration of marine ecosystems
  6. Setting clear standards to determine the success of a restoration project
  7. The marine ecosystems of Israel: monitoring, current state of affairs, projections

During the workshop a Media Workshop for graduate students will be conducted (June 22-23rd) by the Israel Society of Ecology and Environmental Sciences. The workshop is intended for PhD students and post-docs from diverse research areas, whose research relates to marine issues.

The workshop is given without extra charges- Recommended!
